Program Description

At the Upper Career College of Business & Technology, we want to help you realize your teaching goals and dreams of travel. Teach English abroad with your new found knowledge and expertise.

Here at UCCBT we strive to give our students everything they need to succeed in their teaching careers and aim to land our students teaching abroad jobs. The teacher trainers at UCCBT are experienced professionals who will help you to become a confident teacher in teaching English. Our TESL program is offered at nights for individuals unable to study during the day.

This program is recognized by TESL Canada. Students who successfully complete this program and have a degree may apply for TESL Canada’s Professional Standard Level One certification.

Course Outline
Introduction to TESL In the first week the students will learn about different teacher roles, and demonstrate how teachers facilitate learning. Language learners are analyzed in terms of age, characteristic, levels, learning styles and strategies. Also students will learn the basics of planning a lesson are explored.
Practical Approaches In the next two weeks students will learn approaches, methods, procedures and techniques. They are provided with theoretical foundations of teaching ESL.
Teaching Skills Three weeks of a thorough introduction to teaching the 4 language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) and sub-skills such as vocabulary and pronunciation.
Teaching Young Children The next two weeks students will develop the knowledge and practice skills which are needed to teach young children. This module provides a better understanding of the stages of child development and how teachers play an importance role in their growth and progress.
Career Opportunities
Your future career
A 20 hour practicum is a requirement to pass the course. The practicum will be done in real classes monitored by your sponsor teacher. The practicum will involve the student teacher to cover the different skill areas of teaching English. Feedback will be given by both the sponsor teacher and practicum supervisor.
Admission Requirements
All students of UCCBT are required to meet our standard admission requirements. (link to admissions page)
Students, whose first language is English, must:
  • Hold an undergraduate degree from a recognized training institution (transcripts required). TESL Canada will only grant certificates to those who possess a university degree.
  • be 20 years or older
  • submit a resume and a cover letter outlining their goals and reasons for taking the TESL Program
Upon receipt and approval of the above documents, candidates will have to undergo a short interview and language knowledge evaluation to maintain the quality of UCCBT standards.
Students, whose first language is NOT English, must:
  • hold an undergraduate degree from a internationally recognized training institution
  • submit their score on one internationally recognized English language proficiency tests.

    Minimum score requirements:
    TOEFL iBT 80 Paper based 550
    IELTS 6.5 overall
    CLB Level 9
  • Or hold an undergraduate degree from a Canadian Institution
  • submit a resume and a cover letter outlining their goals and reasons for taking the TESL Program
Note: All students must receive a passing score of 20 on the qualifying test: Wonderlic (SLE) Scholastic Level Exam.
